abstract = {In this review, we discuss ecological momentary assessment ({EMA}) studies on mood disorders and mood dysregulation, illustrating 6 major benefits of the {EMA} approach to clinical assessment: (a) Real-time assessments increase accuracy and minimize retrospective bias; (b) repeated assessments can reveal dynamic processes; (c) multimodal assessments can integrate psychological, physiological, and behavioral data; (d) setting- or context-specific relationships of symptoms or behaviors can be identified; (e) interactive feedback can be provided in real time; and (f) assessments in real-life situations enhance generalizability. In the context of mood disorders and mood dysregulation, we demonstrate that {EMA} can address specific research questions better than laboratory or questionnaire studies. However, before clinicians and researchers can fully realize these benefits, sets of standardized e-diary questionnaires and time sampling protocols must be developed that are reliable, valid, and sensitive to change.},

abstract = {The purpose of this research was to evaluate the feasibility of an ecological momentary assessment ({EMA}) technique in a health behavior change intervention offered within university general health courses. A six-week health behavior change project was used with two groups: video journaling and traditional (pencil and paper) group. Research methodology employed was a quantitative, quasi-experimental, control and experimental group posttest comparison design. Stage of change data and program satisfaction surveys were collected from participants at a midsized southeastern university (n = 72; 36 video and 36 traditional). Participants were selected through non-probability, purposive sampling. Upon completion of the behavior change intervention 88.9 \% (N = 32) of video journaling participants reported being in either the action or maintenance stage of change compared to 63.9 \% (N = 23) of the traditional group. Significant difference was found between the video journaling and traditional groups in levels of satisfaction with the program (M = 3.96, {SE} = 0.79; M = 3.53, {SE} = .53 respectively; t = -2.74, p {\textbackslash} 0.05). {EMA} techniques using video journaling to aid behavior change interventions among late adolescence showed promise with further research needed to focus on long-term effects of such interventions.},

abstract="Background: There is considerable scientific interest in finding new and innovative ways to capture rapid fluctuations in functioning within individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), a severe, recurrent mental disorder associated with frequent shifts in symptoms and functioning. The use of smartphones can provide valid and real-world tools for use in measurement-based care and could be used to inform more personalized treatment options for this group, which can improve standard of care. Objective: We examined the feasibility and usability of a smartphone to capture daily fluctuations in mood within BD and to relate daily self-rated mood to smartphone use behaviors indicative of psychomotor activity or symptoms of the illness. Methods: Participants were 26 individuals with BD and 12 healthy control individuals who were recruited from the Prechter Longitudinal Study of BD. All were given a smartphone with a custom-built app and prompted twice a day to complete questions of mood for 28 days. The app automatically and unobtrusively collected phone usage data. A poststudy satisfaction survey was also completed. Results: Our sample showed a very high adherence rate to the daily momentary assessments (91{\%} of the 58 prompts completed). Multivariate mixed effect models showed that an increase in rapid thoughts over time was associated with a decrease in outgoing text messages ($\beta$=--.02; P=.04), and an increase in impulsivity self-ratings was related to a decrease in total call duration ($\beta$=--.29; P=.02). Participants generally reported positive experiences using the smartphone and completing daily prompts. Conclusions: Use of mobile technology shows promise as a way to collect important clinical information that can be used to inform treatment decision making and monitor outcomes in a manner that is not overly burdensome to the patient or providers, highlighting its potential use in measurement-based care. abstract = {{OBJECTIVE} To provide a contemporary assessment of the privacy practices of popular apps for depression and smoking cessation by critically evaluating privacy policy content and, specifically, comparing disclosures regarding third-party data transmission to actual behavior. {DESIGN} {AND} {SETTING} Cross-sectional assessment of 36 top-ranked (by app store search result ordering in January 2018) apps for depression and smoking cessation for Android and {iOS} in the United States and Australia. Privacy policy content was evaluated with prespecified criteria. Technical assessment of encrypted and unencrypted data transmission was performed. Analysis took place between April and June 2018. {MAIN} {OUTCOMES} {AND} {MEASURES} Correspondence between policies and transmission behavior observed by intercepting sent data.
309
{RESULTS} Twenty-five of 36 apps (69\%) incorporated a privacy policy. Twenty-two of 25 apps with a policy (88\%) provided information about primary uses of collected data, while only 16 (64\%) described secondary uses. While 23 of 25 apps with a privacy policy (92\%) stated in a policy that data would be transmitted to a third party, transmission was detected in 33 of all 36 apps (92\%). Twentynine of 36 apps (81\%) transmitted data for advertising and marketing purposes or analytics to just 2 commercial entities, Google and Facebook, but only 12 of 28 (43\%) transmitting data to Google and 6 of 12 (50\%) transmitting data to Facebook disclosed this.
310
{CONCLUSIONS} {AND} {RELEVANCE} Data sharing with third parties that includes linkable identifiers is prevalent and focused on services provided by Google and Facebook. Despite this, most apps offer users no way to anticipate that data will be shared in this way. As a result, users are denied an informed choice about whether such sharing is acceptable to them. Privacy assessments that rely solely on disclosures made in policies, or are not regularly updated, are unlikely to uncover these evolving issues. This may limit their ability to offer effective guidance to consumers and health care professionals.},

abstract = {Assessment in clinical psychology typically relies on global retrospective self-reports collected at research or clinic visits, which are limited by recall bias and are not well suited to address how behavior changes over time and across contexts. Ecological momentary assessment ({EMA}) involves repeated sampling of subjects’ current behaviors and experiences in real time, in subjects’ natural environments. {EMA} aims to minimize recall bias, maximize ecological validity, and allow study of microprocesses that influence behavior in real-world contexts. {EMA} studies assess particular events in subjects’ lives or assess subjects at periodic intervals, often by random time sampling, using technologies ranging from written diaries and telephones to electronic diaries and physiological sensors. We discuss the rationale for {EMA}, {EMA} designs, methodological and practical issues, and comparisons of {EMA} and recall data. {EMA} holds unique promise to advance the science and practice of clinical psychology by shedding light on the dynamics of behavior in real-world settings.},
